One of the more popular branch of Buddhism is none other than Zen Buddhism followed by Tibetan Buddhism, perhaps it is the idea of simplicity of the Japanese culture that makes it so much more relaxing. Famous western people embracing Buddhism are the late Steve Jobs, Steven Seagal, Richard Gere, Tina Turner, Orlando Bloom, Tiger Woods and more.
Personally, I do not categorize Buddhism as a religion, some may disagree and that is the beauty of Buddhism, you will not be punished for being wrong. Reason being that they do not mention God, the creator of this universe and more often than not, their scripture is nothing more than a guide on how to end suffering. In short, what is Buddhism? I believe it is the only “religion” that promotes ‘the way of life’.
Work out your own salvation. Do not depend on others.
Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.
It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.
You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.
Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.
The mind is everything. What you think you become.
No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. They ourselves must walk the path.
The tongue like a sharp knife… Kills without drawing blood.
Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.
Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.
Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.
I never see what has been done; I only see what remains to be done.
Buddha was asked, “What have you gained from meditation?” He replied, “Nothing! However. Buddha said, let me tell you what I lost: Anger, Anxiety, Depression, Insecurity, Fear of Old age and Death.”
Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future. Concentrate the mind on the present.
Health is the greatest gift, contentment is the greatest wealth. Faithfulness is the best relationship.
No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. They ourselves must walk the path.
Three things cannot be long hidden – The Sun, The Moon and The Truth.
The mind is everything, what you think you become.
We are shaped by their thoughts, they become what they think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise they shall not be able to keep their mind strong and clear.
Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.
Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.
There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth, not going all the way and not starting.
Anger Management And The Lotus Flower
Having anger management issues? If you’ve been to the Buddhist temple, you will notice that Buddha is meditating on top of a Lotus flower, here’s why – The lotus flower represents a symbol of calmness, peace and holiness in Buddhism.
Lotus flower grows in muddy water, and it is this environment that gives forth the flower’s first and most literal meaning: rising and blooming above the murk to achieve enlightenment. The second meaning, which is related to the first is purification. It resembles the purifying of the spirit which is born into murkiness. The third meaning refers to faithfulness. Those who are working to rise above the muddy waters will need to be faithful followers. Happy Wesak / Vesak Day.

Please stop smearing the good name of Gautama Buddha. To many in the world telling people that Gautama said something that is not at all true is a very big deal. In fact it’s disrespectful and profane. Fact check it and you will find at least three of these to be false. Have some respect for people’s beliefs.
Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China during the Tang dynasty as Chán. It was strongly influenced by Taoism, and developed as a distinguished Chinese style of Buddhism. From China, Chán spread south to Vietnam, northeast to Korea and east to Japan, where it became known as Japanese Zen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen
I thank the admin for having changed this from Buddha quotes to zen quotes. It was the right thing to do. I exchanged email with him and found him to be respectful of the gravity of making unsubstantiated claims about a loved historical figure such as Gautama Buddha. I offered to help him research the claims so that he could note the quotes with their sources. He went another way with it and that’s his choice.I applaud his effort to propagate what he thinks is wisdom. I appreciate that he does the best he knows how as all of us do.
So… this “enlightenment” concept… what’s the null hypothesis? You /do/ understand arguments fr authority, especially religious ones, are both specious & fallacious, yes?
Is it not apparent to anyone that the complaints seen here, are derived to oppress the purpose that these quotes are shared for. Which consequently implies no true affiliation with the very cause you stand up to defend. Hmmm
Where ever it may come from, Buddha, zen, or wisdom one thing is sure that it’s hold the power of wisdom words and those of us who love quotes are appreciative that it here, and happy to learn the true origin of it! Thank you
